Cycling: Proper Helmet Fit

Helmets come in different sizes which often vary depending on the manufacturer. A helmet is not a hat. It must fit your head accurately and strapped on securely to be protective in case of crash.

Determine the Size – Measure your head to get a rough estimate then try the helmet on to ensure it fits comfortably. Most helmets come with sizing pads to customize the fit. Mix and/or match the foam fitting pads to achieve greatest comfort. Ensure the helmet does not rock side to side.

Positioning and Buckles – Make sure the helmet sits level on your head and about one or two finger-widths just above your eyebrows. The left buckle must be positioned at the center under your chin. Most helmets have straps that can be pulled from the helmet’s back to adjust the length of the chin straps. It’s best to take the helmet off before adjusting the straps.

Adjusting Side Straps and Chin Strap – The side straps must form a “V” shape under the ears. Lock the slider once the adjustment is made. Buckle the chin strap then tighten until it is secured and fixed. No more than two fingers should fit under the strap and the helmet must not rock forward into eyes or backward. To prevent the buckle from slipping, ensure that all four straps should go through the rubber band close to the buckle.

Wear your helmet each time you ride since a bicycle crash can happen at anytime. Replace it when it is damaged, has been outgrown or has been involved in a crash. A properly fitted helmet reduces the risk of brain and head injury.
